What Is Sichuan Opera Face-Changing?

Known in Chinese as Bian Lian (变脸), Face-Changing is a traditional performance technique used in Sichuan Opera.

During the performance, actors change brightly coloured masks almost instantly — sometimes with a turn of the head, the wave of a sleeve or a flick of a fan.

The movements happen so quickly that it can be difficult to see exactly how the transformation is done.

Traditionally, different facial colours represent different personalities, emotions and characters. Red may suggest loyalty and bravery, while black can represent strength or integrity.

The techniques behind Face-Changing have traditionally been closely guarded and passed down between performers.

That sense of mystery is a large part of what makes the performance so fascinating.

Where to Watch Sichuan Opera in Chengdu

There are many performances around the city, but these four venues offer very different experiences.

1. Shu Feng Ya Yun Sichuan Opera House

Best for First-Time Visitors

Shu Feng Ya Yun (蜀风雅韵) is one of the most popular places for international visitors to experience Sichuan Opera.

The theatre is located inside Chengdu Culture Park near Qintai Road and combines a traditional courtyard atmosphere with an old-style Chinese theatre.

Compared with a modern performance hall, the setting feels much closer to the traditional entertainment culture of old Chengdu.

One of its biggest advantages is the overall experience rather than simply the performance itself.

We recommend arriving around one hour before the show.

Visitors can explore the courtyard and, if interested, try traditional costumes and professional makeup before the performance. Costume photography and makeup services normally require an additional fee.

The theatre environment is comfortable and the programme is easy to enjoy even without understanding Chinese.
