Follow the historic Ancient Tea Horse Road through the diverse landscapes and cultures of northwestern Yunnan.
Starting in Dali, explore Erhai Lake, Bai villages and ancient temples before travelling north to Shaxi, a well-preserved former caravan town. Continue into the Tibetan highlands of Shangri-La to discover alpine forests, monasteries and grasslands, then conclude the journey in Lijiang, an important historic trading centre of the Naxi people.
This private journey combines cultural heritage, natural scenery, local experiences and a relaxed travel pace.
Upon arrival at Dali Airport or Dali Railway Station, meet your local driver or guide and transfer to your hotel. After checking in and taking a short rest, begin your exploration of Dali.
Travel to the foothills of Cangshan Mountain, where you can enjoy views of the mountain range rising above the Dali basin and Erhai Lake. The area provides a scenic introduction to the natural geography and cultural landscape of western Yunnan.
Continue to the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, one of Dali’s most recognisable historical landmarks. The three pagodas stand against the dramatic backdrop of Cangshan Mountain and reflect the importance of Buddhism during the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom periods. Chongsheng Temple once served as an important royal temple of the Dali Kingdom.
Later, visit Dali Ancient Town. Walk through its old streets and traditional neighbourhoods, passing landmarks such as the South Gate, Foreigner Street and Renmin Road. The ancient town offers an introduction to Bai architecture, local food and Dali’s long history as a regional centre of trade and cultural exchange.
Begin with a walk or optional cycling experience along the Erhai Ecological Corridor.
Continue to Xizhou Ancient Town to explore traditional Bai residences and sample local snacks. In Zhoucheng Village, join a hands-on tie-dye workshop before travelling to Shuanglang Ancient Town for lakeside views and free time.
Travel north to Jianchuan Ancient Town, known for its traditional Bai houses and woodcarving heritage.
Continue to Shaxi Ancient Town and visit Yujin Bridge, the Heihui River, Sideng Square, the ancient stage and former caravan inns. These historic sites reflect Shaxi’s past as an important stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Road.
Enjoy a light walk along a preserved section of the Ancient Tea Horse Road near Shaxi. Pass through villages, farmland and old stone paths while learning about the history of horse caravans.
Afterwards, take part in a caravan-themed photography experience. In the afternoon, travel to Shangri-La and check in near Dukezong Ancient Town.
Travel to Potatso National Park and explore its alpine lakes, forests, wetlands and highland meadows. The tour combines park shuttle transport with light walking.
Return to Dukezong Ancient Town in the afternoon. Visit Moonlight Square, Guishan Park and the giant Tibetan prayer wheel overlooking the old town.
Visit Songzanlin Monastery and learn about Tibetan Buddhist culture and monastic life.
Continue to Napa Lake, a seasonal wetland and grassland surrounded by Tibetan villages. After the visit, drive to Lijiang and explore the canals, bridges and stone-paved streets of Lijiang Ancient Town.
Enjoy free time in Lijiang according to your departure schedule.
You may explore the ancient town, visit local markets and cafés, or arrange an optional trip to Baisha Ancient Town or Shuhe Ancient Town.
